LPG Heating Case Study - Alburgh with Denton

A Lesson in Heating Efficiency

Alburgh with Denton Primary School in Norfolk has been learning all about the benefits of Calor LPG.

The small Victorian school was recently extended to include a new assembly hall, dining area, toilet block, administrative offices and staff accommodation. Norfolk based property consultants to the education authority, NPS, decided to specify Calor LPG to heat the larger area.

A Calor LPG bulk tank now powers a range of fan convector heaters, radiators and under floor heating equipment at the school, ensuring students and staff alike keep warm all year round.

Tim Peck, NPS project manager, says: ‘We wanted all the benefits of natural gas so, in an off mains area, Calor LPG was our number one choice. Cleaner burning and less hassle compared to oil, Calor LPG also allowed the installation of fuel efficient condensing boilers.’

Tim also praises Calor’s team of LPG technical experts, who were heavily involved in the project from the outset, from advising on initial tank specification right through to overseeing the installation.

Another key factor in the decision to specify Calor LPG was the issue of fuel storage. Tim continues: ‘Oil tanks very quickly become unsightly and require the installation of secondary bunding to meet new environmental legislation. Calor LPG tanks are far more aesthetically pleasing. They don’t require bunding and Calor is responsible for the safety, installation and maintenance of the tank.’

Head Teacher Mrs Dot Lenton adds: ‘We have been delighted with the exceptionally high standards of service we have received from Calor".

Calor provides heating package for schools

Calor provides heating package for schoolsMore and more schools are discovering the advantages of liquefied petroleum gas as the off-mains fuel of choice. Cleaner burning LPG can power a wide variety of applications, including heating, hot water and catering. Not only is it more environmentally friendly it is also more convenient to store and use.

In fact, as new legislation comes into force regarding the storage of oil, LPG starts to make even more sense. Installing a Calor bulk tank couldn't be easier, and because Calor's Think Tank ® telemetry system automatically alerts us when you are running low, ordering fuel is one less thing for you to worry about. We can even install your tank underground for added peace of mind.

Isn't it time you examined LPG for your school?

Old Buckenham High School - Top Marks for Calor

Top Marks for CalorWhen NPS were commissioned to upgrade and extend the science and technology facilities at Old Buckenham High School, a review of the school’s fuel supplies was carried out as part of the project.

As a result, the existing combination of oil and liquid petroleum gas supplies to the science block was replaced by a system that relies solely on Calor LPG.

Calor LPG bulk tanks fuel the energy efficient condensing boilers which heat the new science block and a number of mobile classrooms. Calor’s technical team, who were involved from the outset of the project, ensured spare gas storage capacity was available to heat additional school areas in the future should the need arise.

Paul Bachelder, Senior Administrative Officer, says that the new installation provides a reliable supply to the enhanced facilities. ‘We need gas to carry out our science experiments and technology projects,’ he says. ‘With the new system we get all the benefits of gas in a non-mains area.

‘We are very pleased with the efficiency with which the new system can be operated, and the facility from Calor for routine ‘top-ups’ of the bulk tanks, alleviating another task for busy caretakers from having to check tank levels.’

NPS Property Consultants provided project management, architectural design, mechanical and
electrical services and quantity surveying services to the scheme. Mansell Construction Services and Inviron were the main contractor and sub-contractor under a partnering arrangement for the building works.

Steve Buck, of NPS said: ‘Rather than having two fuel suppliers, we decided it would be more
convenient to use LPG to meet all the needs of the school. It also gave us the opportunity to use high efficiency gas condensing boilers. Calor LPG provided us with an excellent all-in-one package.’
