LPG Heating Case Study - Footherley Hall

Calor Takes a Seat in Care Home

Oil storage, supplier reliability and environmental advantages were behind a care home’s decision to switch from oil to Calor liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).

The Sisters Hospitallers Residential Care Home at Footherley Hall, Staffordshire, chose to work with Calor three years ago to provide a complete heating, hot water and catering solution for over 50 elderly residents.

The 200 year-old Footherley Hall, purchased in 1962 as a care home, is run by 8 Catholic nuns and care staff and is home to 54 elderly residents with special physical or mental needs. Providing complete 24 hour care is the main objective of Sisters Hospitallers and with this in mind, the home needed a reliable energy supplier who could provide a consistent service, and eliminate their
concerns over potential fuel leakage – reasons that led them to Calor, the UK’s leading supplier of LPG.

Making the Change

The Sisters Hospitallers Residential Care Home at Footherley Hall, Staffordshire, switched from oil to Calor LPGUntil 2001, the care home operated its heating on oil. However, after a number of structural extensions it became clear that an alternative, cleaner-burning fuel was needed that had an impressive environmental and safety record but was just as efficient.

Sister Isabel Canton, local superior and manager at Footherley Hall, made the all-important decision to switch fuels and has been very happy with the service provided by Calor and the transition from oil to LPG. She says: "Initiating the change was a difficult decision to make because it is very rare that we change suppliers. However, after recognising the environmental and convenience advantages of LPG I am now very glad that we made that change.

"We were also becoming increasingly concerned over the storage of large amounts of oil and the risks associated with potential leakage. We wanted a fuel that didn’t pose any possible hazards to the environment, or to our facilities and residents." LPG is an established fuel with an impressive environmental and safety record, and offers greater flexibility in powering heating equipment in commercial premises.

LPG eliminates the environmental risks associated with fuel spillage and provides cleaner, convenient power for a range of heating equipment, with clear advantages over fuel oil and electricity.

Cooking on Gas

Calor LPG is used at the residential home to power the heating, hot water and catering facilitiesAs kitchen staff prepare three meals a day for the residents and sisters, it is essential that the LPG-powered equipment is fully operational. Sister Isabel says: "We rely on LPG to power our catering operation and if we cannot supply adequate food for our residents then their health will suffer, which we cannot allow to happen." Within the care home, a Chapel featuring ornate windows is also used daily and providing adequate heat to this area was also a key requirement.

Bob says: "Footherley Hall is a fine example of an establishment that’s a little out of the ordinary yet relies on Calor LPG just as much as the next business. We are very pleased that such a fine care home has chosen us as their gas supplier and we will continue to provide high levels of service".
